ALICE IN CHAINS, the band that consisted of the late vocalist Layne Staley, guitarist and songwriter Jerry Cantrel, bassist Mike Starr but later replaced by Mike Inez in 1993, and the drummer Sean Kinney. The formation of the band landed on the great year of 1984, 5 years later in 1989 they were signed by Columbia records. Their first debut demo can be found as a bootleg release under 'Sweet Alice', but in July of 1990 their EP (extended play) 'We Die Young' was a big hit in metal radio stations. Short after the success of the EP the band hooked up with producer Dave Jerden, resulting in 1990's 'Facelift'. The album wasn't a quick success until MTV played 'Man in a Box', the song was added hit number 18 in the mainstream rock charts. Following 'Sea of Sorrow' hit number 27.
The band would continue making hit albums such as, Dirt, Jar of Flies, Alice In Chains, and their MTV Unplugged, up until the death of Layne Staley's death in 1996. Staley was a heavy drug addict, admitting in his last interview "I know I'm near death, I did crack and heroin for years. I never wanted to end my life this way.", his friends claim that in addition to drugs Staley may have caught an illness he couldn't fight off, due to his compromised immune system. His autopsy revealed Stayley died from an overdose of a mixture of heroin and cocaine. Layne's body was found 2 weeks after his death in his condominium on April 19, 2002.
The band had a 3 year stretch of a break, later found a new frontman (that can never compare to Layne Staley vocally), by the name of William DuVall, and the band still tours and continues making records for the world.
Layne Staley is still known as 'The King of Grunge'.
