NIRVANA, one of the most famous Seattle grunge bands of all time. The group consisted of singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer long lasting Dave Grohl.
In 1988, the band released their first single 'Love Buzz' in the Seattle independent record label Sun Pop. After the release of 'Bleach' in 1989the band traveled on their first ever national tour, they were a favorite to college radio stations. The band was dissatisfied with Sun Pop's lack of promotion and distribution of their albums, so in 1990 Nirvana signed to the record label DGC Records. Because of the significant airplay of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' on MTV, the band quickly gained momentum, and 1991 touring in Europe, the band found their concerts were being dangeously oversold. By Christmas time their album 'Nervermind' was selling 400,000 A WEEK. The album would eventually sell over seven million copies in the United States alone. In 1993, the band's album 'Utero' peaked number one on the Billboard charts with hits like 'Heart Shaped Box' and 'All Apologies'.
In the aftermath of their fame and fortune, the band had set aside the fact that their lead vocalist Kurt Cobain was a heavy heroin addict. Until early 1994, the band was touring in Europe, and Cobain was rushed into a Roman hospital, for a reaction of prescription Rohypnol and alcohol. The tour was then cancelled. In the ensuring weeks Cobain had an intervention, he was convinced to admit himself into drug rehabilitation. Not less than a week, Cobain snuck out, climbed over a wall on the facility, and took a plane back to Seattle.
A week later, on Friday, April 8, 1994, Cobain was found dead of a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head at his Seattle home. The band then broke up, and drummer Dave Grohl continued on to found 'Foo Fighters'.
